Christine Candolin Rooms, installations - a quantum journey

Christine Candolins way of working is hard to define precisely in words, since the content, or idea, of a work can best be sensed as though "beneath" and "behind" it. The evolution of human awareness and the interconnectedness of matter and mind can be said to be the constituents of her visual research. Candolins installations are often large, with multiple parts, and are sited in several rooms in the exhibition space, so that in a material and pictorial sense they form a separate whole in each room, while still also functioning as a complement to the exhibition as a whole.

Candolin seeks to "immaterialise" the materials in her works, so that the specific, everyday character of the material vanishes, and is realised only as the elements that bring out the idea of the work. For example, water dripping into stone basins turns the space into an audio-visual abode of silence, while the transparent and reflective properties of the glass or water, seem to transform human thought into a phenomenon that is visible as motion or energy. The dense steel mesh traps the reflected light, making it strangely present. Candolin also uses delicate, fine pigment powders that powerfully emphasise the sensual, so that they cover the moulded, partly abstract, strongly folded forms, producing a powerful sensation of a kind of physical presence.

In her latest approach to her work she again incorporates hand-written text into her visual expression, while also using slide and video projections on the walls and on the floors. She has also incorporated contemporary physics into her visual thinking and into her philosophical approach, maintaining yet the poetic aspect in her art.

Candolin kytt mys herkk, hienojakoista, voimakkaasti aistillisuutta korostavaa pigmenttijauhoa peittmn valettuja, osin abstrakteja, voimakkaasti laskostuneita muotoja, synnytten vahvan aistimuksen jonkinlaisesta fyysisest lsnolosta.

Uusimmassa tyskentelyssn hn yhdist jlleen kirjoitetun tekstin osaksi kuvallista ilmaisuaan, kytten lisksi dia- ja videoheijastuksia sein- ja lattiapinnoilla. Hn on lisksi sisllyttnyt nykyluonnontieteist etenkin teoreettisen fysiikan ajatuksia visuaalisen tyskentelyns erksi perustaksi, silytten samalla taiteessaan ilmenevn runollisuuden.
